Even in first grade it is easy to get caught in the fast running stream of thinking about test scores. Unfortunately, that type of thinking narrows our focus to small bits of information and before we know it we're not playing the whole game.

I love the way you summed up all you have learned this summer:
"I have spent my summer thinking about how to build inquiry into every lesson, how to raise the level of thinking in my classroom, how to allow my students to be problem solvers as well as collaborators with each other." (Glad to have been learning right beside you!)

Now to march into our classrooms with all with these things in mind and fire-up our learners.

CathyCathyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08233792477358685156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1597522349823417206.post-50171695037754930042011-08-01T17:09:15.629-04:002011-08-01T17:09:15.629-04:00Thanks for the comments and Camille I can hear you...Thanks for the comments and Camille I can hear you cheering! I agree with you Jean about the data-we all need to stay strong as we start our new year!Mariahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09165228990207676534noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1597522349823417206.post-90236085950053977462011-08-01T11:36:52.012-04:002011-08-01T11:36:52.012-04:00When I gave a copy of Kelly's article to my pr...When I gave a copy of Kelly's article to my principal, he said, "It's just one author's opinion." Then, he asked "Where's the data?"
I have to remember what Patrick said about data (the big D word). Our time conferring with kids and reading with kids, and listening to their thinking is the best kind of data.Jeannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1597522349823417206.post-8688106388988356612011-08-01T09:31:29.849-04:002011-08-01T09:31:29.849-04:00If you said all that at a conference, I would be s...If you said all that at a conference, I would be standing up and cheering for you. But since I am alone in my living room, my brain is screaming, "Yes!" Well said! I teach first grade in California but we struggle with the same issues. Keep up the good work and hang tough - our kids all deserve the best (and the best is NOT being taught how to score well on a multiple choice test).
Camille
An Open DoorCamillehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15944280556679586400noreply@blogger.com
