Late Day Celebrating my OLW: Choice

A friend asked me yesterday, "Have you been writing lately?"
I thought that was an interesting question.
I asked, "Why are you asking?"
She replied, " Because I checked your blog."

I pondered this question, and I truly appreciated her inquiry.  I knew my answer in my head, and I explained a little that I just haven't felt like I had anything to share. I had some great moments in class this week but none of them were on the lesson plans. I wonder why I don't feel the need to share these moments. There were moments with my students that I had to make a choice. Choices that included not taking the first grade on a math quiz because he needed to know that studying for the first time at home meant something. His mom had emailed me and told me it was the very first time that he did not fight her to study for a math quiz.  Another student needed to know that she will be a reader. Using her book as my mentor text was powerful to her.  There are choices I make everyday in my class and this week they focused more on building my students' self confidence. Recently I just haven't felt the desire to write.  It's a new position for me to be in, and I am still trying to figure it out.   Thanks to Ruth for encouraging us to Celebrate every Saturday. 1. It seems to me you can celebrate your thoughtful teaching, Maria. Sometimes we just need to settle on one thing, like you said, focus on building your students' self-confidence. Have a nice rest of the weekend!

  2. There is nothing more important than working to build our kids' self confidence...so much happens in all our rooms in the course of a single day, so many quiet decisions that we have to make, and so many quiet celebrations that we may or may not feel like writing about...but take note of anyway. Good to "hear" from you, my friend.

  3. I have been in the same "funk." I think, "I should write about that" but it hasn't been getting done. I found some inspiration today as I have wandered through the celebrations, but it is nice to know that I am not alone! Here's to finding inspiration and writing those words this week for both of us!

  5. Maria~ You being in a place of not needing to write really caught me, especially in reflection of our conversation at "our place." Since school started I have found myself in the same place…not writing, not tweeting and not reading blogs! I miss it, I need it and everyday I say, I have to get back! So today while my family sleeps I am curled up in my favorite room in the house with my laptop to read blogs and my first blog of the morning is your blog! I am sorry you're in this place, but I am glad to know I am not alone. Glad you're writing again and I hope to join you soon!

  6. Sounds like you've had some very important student moments. I think it's okay to take a break from writing/blogging. Sometimes that break gives you the energy and inspiration to come back to it!

  7. Love the choices that you make daily in your classroom. Choices that help students know that they matter, that help them see their possibilities because you believe in them. Thanks for sharing with us.

  8. What an amazing group of supporters. I logged onto my blog and found all the comments. It really is refreshing as I "type" my thoughts out to the world that others feel similar. Isn't that amazing reason to celebrate!
